Not Released, there are no release dates, nor will there be any. Don't ask for them, don't ask for an alpha release.

External Forum: http://z9.invisionfree.com/1866_Wild_West_Mod/index.php?
This forum is set up because this thread has become very un-clear recently. We will see, if it turns out to be a good idea. Please help by showing activity there.

Setting:
It's a few years after the civil war in the western part of the United States. In the north there are Apaches and Comaches, from the south Mexican bandits raid the US villages. Join the US Army and become an honest man or lend your hand to a bandit chief for a fistfull of Dollars.

This is a mod that aims at bringing an atmosphere of the most famous western movies to Mount and Blade. The historical accuracy does not have priority.

You want to help the mod?
  • Testers (up to ca. 10) (we corrently have enough testers) and scene builders (no specific limit) are being recruited. The more activity you show in this thread, the greater is your chance. Team members will of course have access to the Beta too.
  • Help out with models:
    • Smith & Wesson No 1
    • Pepper-box
    • Rifle Scabbard
    • Various clothes; preferable Apache, Comanche and Mexican clothes.
  • Add a 1866 banner to your signature (you can find them at the botton of this post) to get the mod more publicity.

Features:
  • Five Factions:
    • United States Cavalry (very well equipped Cavalry, little number of men)
    • US Settlers (mostly rather poor equipped Infantry and some Cavalry, mixture of modern and out-dated firearms)
    • Comanches (only Cavalry, very fast and little use of firearms)
    • Mexicans (some well equipped Cavalrymen, a lot of poorly equipped Infantry (mostly musketeers))
    • Apaches (some Cavalry and some Infantry, equal ratio of melee and ranged weapons; some firearms)
  • Total Conversion to the year 1866:

Media:
-gameplay trailers:
"The Trapper" at rapidshare
"The Trapper" at youtube (low quality)
"Ride of the Comanchies" at youtube (low quality)

yeah a western mod would be cool, I was planning on making a native american/canadian mod (not because Im really into the whole indian thing), but because it would have been easy as spit, you would just have to make like a rock on a stick, (AKA tomahawk) maybye a bow or two, a club or two maybye a spear, some feathers, and well that'd be about it. the cowboys would take some effort, but you could just ask the makers of one of the previous western mods for them.

Random idea: when I first saw this thread I thought buxtonwas making a mod called curse of the wild west, sadly i was mistaken  .however I have an idea, why not do a kind of parody mod like forum wars on all the failed wild west mods, you could have different towns and factions from all the different mods using their old models, you could replace some kinds of trees with big stacks of 3d binary code something that looks like it fell out of the sky or something, some of the enemies' could be unfinished/screwed up projects, you could replace the bandit faction with, them, some of them could be really crappy models, some of them could have texures that look like they were made in paint, or both, some of them could be unrigged or rigged all gimpedly, they could weild unscaled and misaligned weapons, that shoot out any assortment of randomness. I dunno justy an idea, I could help a bit with models.

How about just trying and gathering everything from the unfinished mods, changing a party template or two, adding a few cities and voila.

that wouldn't work because everyone who made anything good has vanished off the face of the earth. i have like 5 half decent models, but nothing significant enough to make an entire mod with. basically, you would just need a serious modder who doesn't give up and has skill at modding. if i learned how to make good models and use the module system, then i could've made it, but i'm too lazy and busy to bother learning that. if someone wants to make a wild west mod, then just freakin do it. all the serious modders already have huge projects going, so unless someone finally picks it up again it's not gonna happen.

A western mod would deffinately be interesting. I already have a lot of guns from the period made for Bitter Eqarth, and would gladly share them with such a project.
A pity that "Paradox" guy doesn't share his stuff, From what I've seem he had quite a bit done.

On a sidenote, Bitter Earth is pretty much a western at heart...a radioactive western  :).

For a mod like that the best way is simple...get a couple guns, make your parties, and bam. release. Then put out more as you go.

If people can't be bothered to even make party templates and such then their mod is never, ever going anywhere.

That is how I suggest everyone start their mods off if they are using gameplay remotely similar to native.

Bitter Earth is an RPG so releasing it piecemeal is a bad idea, but I would not be surprised to learn more work has gone into it than any mod to date (and I say this not to brag, but so that I do not sound like a hypocrite for not following my own advice, and so people don't think the mod is dead...tons of work getting done, especially by GD. He has been on fire lately).

Whatever happened to that KOSC fellow? I had forgotten all about him, but he seemed to be pretty done with his western mod. Interested people should try getting in touch with him...I have his e-mail.

How about a "Curse of the wild west" mod?

But seriously, most of the mods did not even come up with a name for their mod beyond 'western mod'. It is hard for me to believe a mod is going anywhere if they don't even have that put into it.

I am sure one will come along at some point, though.

TSN: I think that's a matter of perspective. A lot of the big mods use that kind of naming actually (e.g: "Story Mod" , "Fantasy Mod"..). I would prefer more original names too, but I don't think a lame title ruins a book. And I think there's nothing wrong with using such titles at early stages of development too..

Everyone get whatever stuff they have for a wild-west-modification (catchy name, eh?). Let's see what we got. I can't do too much on NOSB at the moment anyway.

I've got a Mauser C-96 (courtesy of Caravan) to be used if the setting is late.

I know for sure that there is a bunch of black powder rifles floating around in various mods.

I'd love to get my dirty hands on [P]aradox's Colt Navy's. They look oustanding!
