Paradox Entertainment to publish Mount and Blade  « on: May 25, 2006, 09:58:28 pm »

I don't know if it was posted here yet, so here's the story: There is a swedish game company called Paradox Entertainment, it got famous for creating strategy games looking like risk, like HOI or Europa universalis & they've also published some titles, like knights of honour; there is also a handsome guy, 19 years of age, who bought all their games &'ve found the following on the forums of their official site:

Independent Labels Signed for Gamersgate.net
Posted May 24, 2006 10:02 am PT

New York, USA (May 23, 2006) - Paradox Interactive announced today the signing of two independent titles for Gamersgate.net.

The download portal, Gamersgate.net, was launched in the beginning of May and it's main purpose is to provide a wide range of strategy games to gamers anytime, anywhere. Continuously adding new partners and new games, the latest addition to Gamersgate.net are strategy titles "Birth of America" from Ageod and "Mount&Blade" from Ikisoft, both which will be made available on the download portal in June.

The company views the signing of these two independent labels as another step in ensuring that smaller developers with promising games have a platform to reach the global market.
It has been published on gamespot, at http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/mountandblade/news.html?sid=6151770 and republished on the official forum. For some odd reasons it says "Ikisoft". A paradox official confirmed the information adding that

Mount & Blade is an excellent game that deserves more people playing it. It doesn't quite fit the Pdx portfolio of strategy games, but we really wanted it for Gamer's Gate. Hopefully we'll have the opportunity to do a boxed version in the future.

so, here's the thread:>>>

Wow, cool news. The "Ikisoft" thing is definitely odd.
For some reason the Gamespot link doesn't work, and the other link requires registration.

Interesting. Frightening but interesting. I guess I'm mainly worried that somehow we shall be cut off from a release at some point: like if they make a version which is no longer sold online. Honestly, I think online sales is the best way to go. I would have bought the Gothic games within a day or two of getting the demo (as I did with M&B) if I could have just downloaded them. As it is, I just ordered one last night; the added shipping cost, and wait made it less attractive though.

I didn't know Paradox was still around. Nice to see that they're making an EUIII - I hope they fix the problems that they put in with II.

Well, quote from the article:

So I don't think there would be a problem of it not being available online.

I'd be more frightened if it wasn't Paradox. I trust them.

Seriously, imagine "EA Games to publish Mount and Blade" ;)

I really don't know why Armagan did this. well, i suppose it all depends on what creative control thier giveing him (100% i hope), and how much per sale they'll give him.

Also, if it somehow foces us to buy again, i won't be happy. at all.

I don't really. The upgrade from EU to EUII added a number of exciting features, but in the end did serious damage to the accuracy. I suspect that they didn't think everything through as well as they should.

As to why Armagan would sell, I would guess to reduce his personal risk. He probably was offered enough to be happy with. Maybe also to begin developing M&B2.  The game certainly will recieve more press with a label. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Yeah, it's his project after all. i just hope armagan's still in control of the project, and that we won't have to buy our copy's again.

As long as the game remains as accessible to modders as it has been, I'll be happy (I think).

well, in a way this great news for the game, getting some serious cash investment hopefully but i really hope it doesnt affect the 'grass roots' development too much and this Paradox company doesn't stop our fantastic modding community from being involved as much as they have.

One of the main appeals to M&B, apart from it being a fucking fantastic game experience, is the fact that its got this great indepence that allows the freedom to do stuff riskier and more hardcore than the bigger game companies can achieve.

I guess I just hope this aint no 'sell-out'.

Well the changes were nescessary, but there are also quite some mods that fix this and that, look here for instance. From EU1 to EU2 they made the whole world playable, events, disabled instant annexion etc. etc. wasn't that bad imho. Besides they released new titles annually, like crusader kings, victoria or the famous Hearts of Iron which all aren't bad games, but that's what they did themselves, not what they published. Titles they've published are Galactic Civilizations, Take Command & Knights of Honour in which they don't seem to have interferred at all. The first being a Master of Orion/Civ3 clone, the second a remake of Sid Meyer's Gettysbourg, the third one something like rome total war in medieval with worse graphics but more freedom. All with multiplayer support in them 8D

I certainly do trust them. The only thing to fear is - if they actually would do the boxed version - one certain release date which would stop m&b from being continiously developed. :( But it'd get even more popular on the other hand 8D.

There's nothing to stop them from releasing patches even after the boxed version hits the shelves.
